50s Costumes
After the austerity of the war it was understandable that the styles of the 50s were going to be very different to the styles of the previous decades. Teddy Boys and Rockers were seen on the streets of many cities and towns and they were a symbol of the growing emergence of the teenager. The look can still be found in some places today, but to really get an idea of the style of the day you need to look to the fancy dress costumes available from the decade.
For true rebels, there can be the characters from Grease, and even the characters that they could have been based upon – Marlon Brando and James Dean. Brando can be copied as long as there is leather jacket and a cap, while jeans, a cigarette and a quiff will make all other guests think of James Dean. Elvis Presley is another who will be easy to emulate, but make sure to practice the moves before leaving the house. 50s costumes relating to Elvis Presley are not just being used at fancy dress parties, but also at the many conventions were impersonators gather and even some of the Wedding Chapels in Las Vegas have a requirement.
Film stars of the decade will be ideal characters and if there was a couple looking for a costume they could do a lot worse than to dress as the main characters from The King and I. A woman alone could dress as Marilyn Munroe and there are plenty of 50s costumes dedicated to her, not just the one that rises up over an air vent. War films may have not featured as much this year there were some, so forces costumes would be available.
50s costumes will be ideal for women who want to show off their femininity as there were plenty of other actresses who have become icons. Grace Kelly, Audrey Hepburn and Elizabeth Taylor all had major roles and their look can be easily viewed and imitated.
Sports should not be forgotten and fans of players from days gone by will be glad to know that there are 50s costumes that will allow them to dress like their idols. Willie Mays was the big name in baseball and the costume from that decade is available for use at parties. Boxers costumes are easy to find if not ideal to wear, and Rocky Marciano was one of the big name of this decade along with Sugar Ray Robinson.
Horror characters will still be suitable when looking for 50s costumes, as even though this is not the decade that a lot of the main characters came into being, there were many horror films made, introducing characters such as The Fly, Teenage Zombies and the named star in The Curse of the Aztec Mummy
